“Men’s fashion has a certain heaviness in the fabrics and construction. But also there is a heaviness in the mentality”
– Hedi Slimane
For all the flair and panache women’s fashion often gets and attracts, men’s fashion, on the other hand, has for many years remained glaringly unappreciated and vastly underrated. When it comes to stylish sartorial creations and items, women’s fashion is thrust into the limelight while men’s fashion lords over the backstage. However, this is beginning to not always be the case. Today wherein men are already considered wearing the height of fashion in crisp dress shirts, tailored slacks and elegant hats. Now, todays men’s style has taken center stage and is rarely outshone by women’s fashion. After all, there is something that commands respect and admiration in a man who dresses impeccably and as Lexa Doig once said, “Men with style are great because they have a sense of self.”
Remember, how you dress gives people an insight or an impression of who you are as a person. So, it may be time to trade those wholesale coogi hoodies, oversized jeans and baller caps for something a bit more sophisticated for the older and wiser you—and it is best to start with the essentials and the basics. Here are some indispensable style techniques and tips to help you get started.
1.) FIND A SUIT THAT FITS
Ideally, your wardrobe should consist of at least three suits with the first one being either navy blue or gray and would be a medium weight. The second suit should be the suit which you did not get the first time around, and the last one should be black which can be used not only for funerals but black tie affairs as well. But if investing in three suits is out of the question for now, then invest in one good suit that would fit you well. You would not want to be caught wearing an ill-fitting suit which happens to be your only suit.
2.) UPGRADE YOUR OUTERWEAR
You might disregard the necessity for outerwear considering that fall and winter only make up two seasons of an entire year, but as you are going to be wearing coats for the majority of the winter months, you might as well invest in a good one. Look for a sharp overcoat that would slim down your body and which would make you appear sharp and sophisticated.
3.) BUY A PAIR OF SHOES THAT GOES WITH YOUR JEANS
Teenage men and men in their early twenties are notorious for pairing their jeans with oversized gym shoes. You should know by now that if you want a crisp and classy look, it would be best if your gym shoes are worn where they belong: in the gym. Invest in a pair of stylish loafers, and some chukka boots that look great and are comfortable to wear as well.
4.) KNOW WHEN SHORTS ARE APPROPRIATE
This summer staple is not barred from a man’s wardrobe. However, it is imperative that men know when to wear them. This is not to say that you should only use them sparingly, but find an appropriate occasion for when they are needed. For a modern and trendier fit, look for fitted shorts that hit just above the knee as this will make your overall ensemble look crisp instead of sloppy.
5.) UPGRADE YOUR TEES
You might want to hold on to your graphic Star Wars tees, statement shirts with bold proclamations and old fraternity tees-there is no harm in doing so as long as you wear them inside the house or something to go to sleep in. These shirts are holding back your style and should be traded for neutral tees in black, gray and olive which are incredibly versatile when it comes to mixing and matching.
