The Art of Shoemaking: Interview with George Glasgow Jr. of George Cleverley

(George Glasgow Sr. & George Glasgow Jr.)

George Cleverley is renowned as one of the worlds most revered shoemakers, founded by Mr. Cleverley in 1958.  The shoemaker quickly gained a reputation as the best, having since created shoes for everyone from David Beckham and the cast of Kingsman to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales.  Today, the boutique shoemaker is headed by father and son team George Glasgow Sr. and George Glasgow Jr. who continue to elevate the renowned brand’s status in the market of today.  Recently, we were given the privilege of speaking with George Glasgow Jr. on all things shoe-making.

What is the inspiration for the George Cleverley RTW line?

“George Cleverley have been making and selling RTW shoes for over 30 years.  The inspiration of each style comes from our bespoke collection, where every shoe has a story and generally always comes from a previous bespoke order.  We also wanted to offer the market a shoe which we felt was the best value for money and RTW in the world.  A lot of time and effort goes into the making of our RTW collection and still we make everything in England with each detail carefully planned.  We also only use the finest materials available to ensure the shoes can be resoled and last for many years to come.”

What is the most difficult aspect of being a shoemaker in the market of today?

“Unlike most of our competitors, we have not taken any of our production overseas.  We make all of our shoes today in England.  We focus only on making the finest shoes in the world.  I think staying true and classic to your brand is always important.  We make new styles but it is always in line with the George Cleverley brand and design aspects.  Keeping your identity in a fast changing market is always the challenge.”

What shoe would you like to make in the future that you have not made yet?

“We have just finalized a few casual styles.  Something different and more for weekends & beachwear which we feel is going to be the best in the market.  It’s handmade in England with unique features and designs.  Its something I have been working on for a few years and delighted that we are going to launch this exclusive collection on MR. PORTER in May.”

Can you tell us more about your career, and the way you got into shoe-making?

“I grew up in the shoe-making business and have really been around shoes my whole life.  I went to the University of London and studied Economics, which lead me to work in investment banking for several years after college.  I then returned to my family business in 2007 and have been there ever since.  It’s my passion and something which I generally love doing everyday.”

Which other shoemakers do you like?

“I like shoemakers that have their own style, and do not just follow seasonal trends.”

Style advice from George Glasgow?

“Always invest in your shoes and your bed because if you’re not in one then you’re in the other.  I always advise in buying a good quality shoe, which is well made and classic.  It’s also important to know what style and cut suits you. This will make picking an outfit a lot easier and looking sharp at the right occasion.”

What do you believe sets George Cleverley apart from its competitors?

“We are the last family owned and operated bespoke shoemaker in England.  We offer fantastic customer service and strive to make the best possible shoes in the world by hand.  Our brand is run like a family and not a corporation which our clients can feel and appreciate.  Our clients become friends and part of our company and not just another number.  We also have the latest selection of exotic skins in the world, so we have an impressive selection of materials for our clients to design something unique to them.”

Where does George Cleverley obtain their leathers from?  Tell us more about some of the different bespoke leather options George Cleverley is famous for.

“We source all of our materials for shoes in England (soles, linings e.t.c.).  Our calf sometimes will vary depending on where the best calf is location at the time of buying.  In recent years it has been Germany.  Our exotic skins comes from either the USA or Singapore.  Our unique exotic business is one of the biggest in the world.  We source very unique hides & skins for our clients.”

Where do you see George Cleverley in 10 years?

“Hopefully in the same place as today.  We attract an amazing clientele from all over the world.  Some of the most unique individuals from all different backgrounds that love our product.  We have all ages and all nationalities which is a testament to the product.”

Style Icons: Interview with Andreas Weinås

Meet Andreas Weinås; the 30 year old Swedish menswear journalist who proves to be an icon of a true Gentleman’s style.  Andreas who currently serves as both the Executive Editor of the online Menswear/Clothing publication Manolo.se as well as an Editor of the Swedish print publication Kings Magazine.  Andreas who was once a professional handball player, has entered the menswear industry from a rather unorthodox background.  Though now proves to be an innovator and source of inspiration for well dressed men around the globe.  We were given the incredible opportunity to interview with Andreas, whom was just recently dubbed by Rake Japan – as “One of the 10 Most Rakish Men” their way of saying: One of the Best Dressed Men in the World.

What are you currently inspired by?

“For the last two years I’ve been very inspired by South Korean tailoring. Conceptually I think B&Tailor does an amazing job and makes some of the finest bespoke pieces in the world. I love the slightly fuller cut and classic silhouette combined with modern and contemporary details. Another brand that I think is worth mentioning is Agyesh Madans brand Stòffa in the US. They make MTM outerwear, trousers, bags and accessories that are simply incredible. Especially the suede jackets that, in my opinion, are some of the best value in the business.”

Take us through a day in the life of Andreas Weinås.

“I try to workout at least 4-5 times a week and often before going to work. My workday normally starts around 9 a.m. with either a meeting in the city or at the office. I´m in charge of the day to day business of Manolo.se and on top of my own articles I edit the material from our freelance writers. I try to be as efficient as possible and plan my days in advance so that the website and magazine will run smooth even if I´m out of town for a business trip.”

How would you describe your own personal style?  Do you have a special cut philosophy?

“I consider my style to be a mixture of Scandinavian, Italian and British. The colour scheme is “Scandinavian” with a base of navy, brown and grey. I can appreciate men wearing vivid colors but I prefer a muted color scheme myself. The “Italian” part is definitely in the make. I prefer a soft construction with little to no canvas in the chest and shoulders. Neapolitan brands like Cesare Attolini and Orazio Luciano make some excellent soft tailoring in my opinion. The “British” part is the actual fabrics. There´s an expression called “Stile Inglese” which refers to Italians doing their version of British menswear. By combining the soft construction of Naples with heavy British fabrics in flannel, tweed and cashmere you get the best of both worlds if you ask me.”

Tell us about some of your go to pieces in your wardrobe.

“I have a navy made-to-measure suit from Cesare Attolini that I consider to be the backbone of my wardrobe. It´s made up in a British Birdseye cloth and the best fit I´ve experienced. Another piece that is special to me is a bespoke Polo Coat from B&Tailor in a “bulletproof” heavy wool fabric by Holland & Sherry. I´ve worn it pretty much everyday since I picked it up earlier this fall. On the more casual side, I would say that I´m extremely fond of my chocolate suede MTM jacket from Stoffa. It´s a shorter flight jacket with a large collar, oversize pockets and a double zip.”

What are your favorite clothing stores, either online or brick and mortar?

“I’m very impressed by The Armoury, both in New York and Hong Kong. I think they have done a lot for the revival of classic elegance in a modern context and they have a great philosophy about the brands or rather artisans they carry. In Sweden, I think Saman Amel (Made-to-measure atelier by two young and ambitious guys) is very inspiring.”

What do you think is the biggest faux pas or style sin that men commit?

“Not paying attention to the small details. It doesn’t matter if you buy a bespoke suit if you combine it with a pair of low quality plastic leather shoes. By paying attention to details like the tie knot and the sleeve/trouser length, you can look the part in something very reasonably priced.”

Tell us more about Manolo.se & King Magazine and your role at both Publications.

“Manolo.se is the biggest website in Scandinavia with a focus on sartorial menswear. We publish one article a day and it can be everything from a made-to-measure review to a feature of a new store opening. King Magazine is the biggest fashion magazine in Sweden for men and they are both are owned by Egmont Publishing.”

Manolo.se is the biggest menswear blog in Sweden, what is the greatest challenge in heading the site?

“I think the greatest challenge is to find a balance between high quality and a reasonable price range for the products we feature. We will focus a lot on bespoke in the +3000€-range because it´s simply the highest level of craftsmanship, but to be relevant to all our readers, we also try to highlight price worthy options under 1000€. To me it´s important that what we recommend is something that feels like a great product in that price range.”

What do you believe sets Stockholm apart, being your locality of choice?

“I’m originally from Gothenburg on the West Coast of Sweden but Stockholm is without a doubt a stronger city when it comes to sartorial menswear. With the Swedish financial sector located in the city, it´s only natural that men wear more suits and ties. I think especially young men in Stockholm dress exceptionally well with a lot of focus on fit and details.”

Favorite restaurant in Stockholm?

“My favorite restaurant in the city is a Japanese/Scandinavian fusion restaurant called Shibumi. It´s located in the basement of the Michelin star restaurant, Esperanto, but with a more simple presentation and a lower price point. The beef and salmon tartars are the best I´ve tasted in the world.”

Photographer: Ted Olsson

What timepieces do you currently have in your collection?  Do you have a holy grail watch you aspire to one day own?

“I have around 10-12 pieces at the moment. Since about a year or two I´ve decided to slim it down with fewer but “better” pieces. My favorite ones are the Patek Philippe Nautilus (ref. 5711), The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak (ref. 15202) and my Cartier Tank Americaine. The most important in my heart however is probably my old Rolex Datejust (ref. 1600) that was handed down to me from my Grandfather. It´s a fairly humble piece, but the history and previous owner makes it such a special one.”

Where to next?

“At the time of writing I´m off to Milan for a very special project. I was asked to walk as a runway model for the Dolce&Gabbana FW/18 Menswear Show in Milano Fashion Week.”

The Masterful Mens Shoemaker: Vass

Vass has been excelling as one of the best mens shoemakers, creating fine made to order footwear for the elegant gentleman for over 30 years.  The founder/leader of Vass, Laszlo Vass, has studied a seemingly infinite amount of knowledge and a keen amount of insight on shoemaking, even going as far as putting his own philosophy of handmade shoes into a book.

Since the beginning of Vass, Laszlo Vass has upheld a steadfast determination in forging all his shoes by hand, employing hand welting techniques, opposed to most shoemakers who have been utilizing soulless stitching machines.  But today, with the support of a new and an enlarged team of over twenty highly skilled craftsmen, he now offers ready-to-wear shoes of the highest caliber to customers throughout the globe.

The handmade shoemaking practice in Hungary travels all the way back to the 19th century Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and a number of the methods and techniques have changed very little since then.  If someone’s personal shoe style revolves around English and Italian styles, then the Austro-Hungarian time-honored designs such as Alt Wein (punched cap toe) or the Budapester (wingtip) may appear a bit bulkier.  But with that curved shape and higher toe, the style becomes a brilliant matchup for a goyser welt structure along a robust design.

A pair of these shoes can go together with almost anything in your wardrobe, making your choice of wear very flexible.  The lift of the hand-welted sole, the high quality leather, the hearty & robust lasts, the imprecise allure of hand hammered nails and finishes.  So many different kinds of characteristics gives this shoe an air of distinction among other well known shoemakers, which labels Vass as a one-of-a-kind shoemaker that goes the extra mile to ensure you get the perfect pair of the utmost quality.

But for those looking for a sleeker designed shoe, Vass collaborated with Roberto Ugolini to develop a collection of Italian lasts that unite hand-welted construction with genteel forms. Vass also has a How To Order guide that takes you step by step through their ordering process.

Isaia

When searching for a high quality sport coat, no ones a better choice or more suited for the task than Isaia.  As they skillfully create the go-to sport coat in an array of alluring colors, patterns, and styles, while detail remains the Neapolitan brand’s signature.  Hallmarks diverge from the conflicting drape of material below the collar to the apex-ed peak lapel, along various other lapel styles.

Brunello Cucinelli

When it comes to Brunello Cucinelli nobody is more talented or more proficient in creating comfortably yet stylish apparel, and last fall the Italian fashion designer has taken a leap forward with his company’s know-how to abide in the world of athleisure, or attire designed for both the athletic and the leisure life.  This combination of cashmere jogging pants and hooded jacket upheaval from a trip to the gym to a casual dinner effortlessly.

Tom Ford

Well-known for their elegantly tailored suits, Tom Ford is also giving thrill to many of his fans with denim.  Ever since establishing denim offering in his Spring/Summer 2015 collection, the renowned designer has added on new and improved styles seasonally.  Judging by his latest of designs, such as these slick, slim jeans and jacket, anticipate for a high amount of comfort along style, as well as a fit that is sure to even compete with that of their suits.

The Savile Row House of Huntsman Comes to Manhattan

Finally, the bespoke tailor “Savile Row house of Huntsman” has opened their first boutique outside of London at a seventh-floor atelier on 57th Street, Manhattan.  From generation to generation, Huntsman has provided stylish gentlemen with the perfect bespoke suit, tailor-made so well to the body that it felt like it was apart of them.  There are two kinds of men; the first kind is the man who picks his clothes based-off what size he is, even though the fit won’t match his body perfectly.  And the other, is the man who lets his clothes pick him, the one who gets the perfect length, the perfect cut, the perfect you.  With Huntsman’s new Manhattan location, you can visit professional tailors to custom design a suit that will fit like a glove and last a lifetime.

Huntsman’s Creative Director Campbell Carey, a man who rose up through the ranks as an apprentice cutter (a program that takes eight years to master) said “you’d be surprised how local our buyers are in New York.” Custom suits can take at least two fittings to become “a second skin,” he says.  “But they last forever.  I have gentleman coming in with their father’s and they’re still in mint condition.  We have seen suits from the 1920s, and as long as they’ve been looked after, they are still perfect,” Carey says.

What separates their suits from off-the-shelf and other high-end bespoke suits, is that each Huntsman jacket is constructed by hand from beginning to end through the same craftsman in Cheshire.  It has a total of six layers, all the way from British wool (which they work with 8,000 different options) to horsehair (to give it shape) to satin lining.  Huntsman’s most popular item, is the one button navy blazer with slanted double pockets.  Carey said, “it’s a less is more look,” in his thick Ayrshire brogue.  “It’s where we start with our clients, before guiding them to more personalized looks.”

What’s more, the heritage brand is at long last launching a ready-to-wear line of six cuts that begin at around $2,250 for a two-piece suit.  The next improvement is known as Made to Measure, which are factory-made but adjusted to fit the qualifications of a customer, and is priced relatively more.  But of course neither is comparable to the sheer quality of the bespoke suits for which Huntsman is most reputable for, which take from six to nine months to finish and are priced from about $4,500 and $7,500, respectively.  Roughly 30 measurements are needed to ensure the suit is perfect for you, with up to four fittings or more.

“Unfortunately, bespoke tailoring isn’t scalable, and there are no shortcuts, so we can only make about 1,000 suits a year,” states Carey.  “We always say that when someone sees a man in a Huntsman suits, they should say, ‘You look great,’ not ‘Your suit looks great.  The way the suit fits should be what people notice.  You wear the suit, the suit doesn’t wear you.”  Huntsman adds no label or branding that signifies the custom tailored suit was handmade in Cheshire.  “The suit maketh the man, as they say,” adds Carey.

Customize Your Own Pair of Salvatore Ferragamo Shoes

Salvatore Ferragamo has recently added a new made-to-order program that lets everyone get the chance to change things up and put their own spin on the brand’s classic yet stylized designs.  In what was first launched in September, the Tramezza Made-To-Order Experience offers many customizable options such as, Double Monkstraps, Monkstrap Boots, and leather Oxfords.  In addition, each made-to-order customer has the power to select their shoes’ detailing, color, material, and buckle finish, you can also monogram the soles to give you an unparalleled custom-making experience.  Not only are these custom-made shoes something new to Ferragamo, but the packages in which the shoes come in are something new as well: red shoeboxes that bear resemblance to petite, bespoke trunks.  The made-to-order services’s tiresome shoemaking process takes six hours of work done by a professional cobbler along with a four-day shaping method, and calls for up to 12 weeks of delivery after which to order has been placed.  A pair of custom-created Salvatore Ferragamo’s shoes begin at $1,500 and can go up to $13,500 for the crocodile-leather option.
