A Fashion Blogger Guide to Fashion Week

First came the World; Then – came Fashion.

Let not those (very) religious take offence at what we are about to say but – fashion is religion; not the type of religion we pray to (although, sometimes we do, right?) but the one that inspires us to find the never-ending elegance, chic and style within and conduct ourselves with proper pride and mannerism. Fashion has millions and millions of followers and as such – it definitely qualifies as a sort of divinity (we are happy to obey).

In the midst of preparations for the Fashion Week, who better than designers themselves to give you advice on what to wear or what to do to scoop a lil’ drama; unfortunately, those same designers are too busy designing collections that will be catching eye (and pockets) of the glitterati. The second best would be fashion editors; unfortunately, they’re exceptionally busy as well at this time of year. So then, we come to fashion bloggers. Third (time’s) the charm? Sure!

Let’s see what these exceptional fashion experts are advising…

Don’t Try to Parachute In (they’ll throw you out)
A Fashion Week is an industry-only event; no one who isn’t a part of the fashion industry can attend and even those who are, need to register first. With the registration approved, you may be getting invitations from the brands and designers to attend their shows along with other special events.

NOTE: Festivals or Fashion Weekend are NOT a Fashion Week. Unlike the first two consumer events where anyone can purchase tickets to attend, Fashion Week catwalk and designer experiences are invitation-only events. So, make sure you register and get your credentials in time – you don’t want to embarrass yourself in front of Olivier Rousteing, right?

Get Your Business Cards Ready (be professional)

Guide to Fashion Week
Getting to meet someone at the fashion industry is huge! This is an overwhelming industry with a lot of potential to help you get noticed (but you’ve already known that), so having your business cards ready is a must. Hand out your cards to photographers and bloggers, and be open to receiving a few (or a dozen). Also, follow up with those you find most interesting for references.

NOTE: Keep the business card standard; if too small, they’re easily lost. If too big, they can’t fit a regular wallet. Also, keep the design clean; you want to let people know what you do and how to reach you. List your conventional contact info on the back side of the card, as well as all your social media handles.

Make a Wardrobe Plan (in agreement with the weather)

Guide to Fashion Week
One of the biggest questions for the first time NYFW attendants is, obviously, what to wear. What the naïve crowd doesn’t know is that changing several outfits throughout the day to make an impression is an overkill.

Regulars at the NYFW are fashion experts, designers, editors, models, celebs, socialites and such – and they’re there explicitly for the fashion alone, not the showoff (well, some of them are). Habitually, they’ll wear their usual uniforms upgraded with an accessory or two to add a little glamour but that’s where the story ends.

If you are hoping to increase your chance of getting photographed by street style photographers, be on point. Don’t go crazy with your combos just to stand out; rely on your fashionable ladies clothing for effect and keep your NYFW outfit true to your style. Also, don’t get discouraged if you don’t get published. Mostly, those who have already built a name for themselves make the cut while the rest – wait for the next time they might get lucky.

Mingle with Others (expand your network)
Whether you are a fashion or lifestyle blogger yourself, a photographer (or both), fashion reporter, an up and coming model, or any other segment of the fashion industry, find those from the same field as you are and introduce yourself. Expanding your network at events like these is phenomenal – not only because you are forming potential business collaborations, but because you are getting to meet amazing people who share your interests. Enjoy it!

Meet Clare Cirillo

Meet Clare Cirillo; the young model & fashion blogger who is taking the NYC Fashion Blogging community by storm with her one of a kind blog “WhenInManhattan.com“.  Born and Raised in Westchester County, Clare recently graduated Fordham University with a Bachelors in communications.  Now residing in the West Village, Clare is always on the-go as she focuses her attention towards the fashion industry.  Her deep passion for fashion has influenced Clare greatly, whether she is styling simply stunning outfits or bringing inspiration & excitement with her amazing style tips.  We spoke exclusively with the always fashionable Clare about her incredible blog & all things modeling.

What are you currently inspired by?
“I’m currently inspired by street style—which I think is the reason I started my blog! Living in Manhattan I have always been inspired walking down the streets and seeing the different ways people wear clothing. I think the most important thing I have learned is that you don’t have to have a lot of money to look fashionable and express yourself. One of the things I try to advocate on my blog, is that you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on clothes! I usually have one expensive item (usually shoes or a handbag) and then go lighter on the clothing. SO many people on the streets of Manhattan walk around on a budget and still manage to look good, so its definitely obtainable to dress on a budget. That being said, street style is definitely one of my biggest inspirations. I am starting a new category on my blog next month about my favorite street style looks!”

How did your blog wheninmanhattan.com come to be?
“I started my blog about a year ago when I was still in college. I have always loved fashion and social media, and decided that starting my own blog would go hand in hand with my career as a fashion model. I not only love to be behind the camera, but I have always loved the fashion and styling that goes into creating the perfect image. My career is modeling—but eventually I want to be more than just a model. I knew that starting a blog and creating my own voice in the industry would eventually help with that aspect.”

What do you believe sets your style apart from other personal style bloggers?
“I think my career and education definitely sets me apart from other fashion bloggers! Career aspect—I am trying to do more behind the scenes pictures at photo-shoots and jobs to give people an inside scoop of what really goes on behind the scenes at a photo-shoot! Before modeling I always wondered what happened behind the scenes, so this year I will definitely be sharing more information on that. As far as my education—college has taught me so much information that I am going to eventually tie into my blog. I love writing, so I am definitely going to try to to do more of that in the upcoming months.”

Who are some of your favorite designers at the moment?
“Alexander Wang, Stella McCartney, and Johnson Hartig.”

What Fall trends have you been looking forward to?
“Fall is one of my favorite seasons. I love layering long shirts, sweaters, and jackets together. Mixing different textures together is also something I love to do and you’ll be seeing a lot on the blog in the upcoming months!”

Tell us about your career as a model. How did you get started?
“I got started really randomly! I was in college and my now manager saw a picture of me and thought I had potential. I remember flying down to Miami for my first photo-shoot not knowing what to expect. From there I continued to better my career as a model and grow in the fashion industry!”

Take us through a typical day in the life of Clare Cirillo.
“Recently my days have been craziness. Thankfully I’m a huge morning person. I try to wake up really early and work out first thing (usually around 7 a.m.) I usually get a smoothie from my favorite juice bar right after my work out. Then I come home, shower, and get ready for my day. If I’m not at work, I’m usually shooting for my blog, going on castings, meeting with my agency, or grabbing lunch with my friends or family. If I’m not too busy I usually go down to Soho and shop for my blog, or just go to get inspiration from stores. Then I usually get dinner with a friend, or pick something up and eat with my roommates. Living in the city and having no time, it’s hard for me to grocery shop and cook, so I usually am picking up Sweetgreen, Dig In, or something healthy for dinner.”

What is your favorite thing about living in New York City?
“What’s not to love?”

What’s one of the most interesting shoots that you’ve done?
“I love going to cool places to shoot. My least favorite shoots are in the studio, no matter how built up the hair, makeup, and styling can be, it’s always more interesting when we shoot on location outdoors. I’ve been lucky enough to travel to cool places to shoot, one of my favorites being in Big Sur. I love the outdoors, so being in one of the most beautiful places in the world shooting was definitely surreal.”

If you could travel anywhere right now where would it be?
“Everywhere in Europe.”

What are some of your favorite things to do when not working?
“Go hangout with my family in Westchester, NY!”

What is something most people don’t know about you?
“I’m a huge homebody! I love being home with my family. I’m thankful enough to have all my family really close to the city, so I see them a lot. And whenever I get the chance I go home to Westchester to escape the city.”

What are some of your favorite outfits that you’ve posted so far?
“I love sharing what types of outfits I wear to go meet clients in. My “model off duty” outfits are really minimalistic, simple, and usually form fitting. They are a good indication of my everyday look and style. So all of those types of outfits are my favorites because they really are what I wear when I’m out and about, and aren’t anything too over the top.”

What are some of your greatest passions outside of Fashion & Modeling?
“I love to run… I hope in the upcoming years to complete a marathon! Running has always been a passion of mine, it keeps me sane! Everyday I try to run with my beat headphones on, it’s my escape from my insane life. I also love photography. I’m not very good, but love capturing special candid moments. I don’t think it’d ever become a career of mine, but anyone that knows me, knows I take pictures constantly.”

Where to next?
“Stay tuned…”

Where can we follow you?
“My Instagram is @clarecirillo where you can find everyday updates of my life, and my fashion blog is www.wheninmanhattan.com!”

Digital Femininity: Chanel’s Spring Summer 2017 Collection

Chanel shows are always spectacular, but there can only be one at a time, and their latest Spring/Summer 2017 collection takes center stage this time around.  With an unbeatable style, Chanel has made this line the go-to ready-to-wear collection of Spring/Summer 2017.  The collection offers a futuristic vibe that transforms the wearer into something extraordinary.  In this collection Karl Lagerfeld remodeled the Grand Palais into a Chanel ‘Data Center‘.

The collection adopted the thought of ‘intimate technology’, which was depicted as an ode to feminine softness.  The popular trend of the season’s fashion weeks, ruffles, was seen decorating lustrous blouses during the collection.  ‘Digital Femininity’ also Features blue, pink, yellow, purple, red, and a few pastels & electric shades that has brought a fierce passion to the line.

Karl Lagerfeld united the intimate technology theme with Chanel’s current feminine style.  Gentle silk, lace, and crepe georgette were placed side by side with present-day details of touch fasteners, rubber, and vinyl strips in company to Chanel’s well known designs that relate to electronic cords.  Showcasing silk dresses that bear digital-inspired motifs and sequins in the electronic cable style makes for a surprising yet intriguing choice by the high fashion house.  Introducing an innovated style, models carried futuristic robot clutches, wore big pendant necklaces, and were finished up with a cap worn to the side.

Featuring the house’s classic tweed jackets topped with silk and lace negligees, just as well the effeminate lace was spotted on shell guipure petticoats and a fashionable pair of silk pajama styled trousers.  This simply incredible look represents the constantly changing world and how far technology (not to mention fashion) has come through the ages.

Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2017 “Magic Lanterns” Collection

Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection has been unveiled, showcasing a variety of fresh new designs featuring cool edgy vibes and a totally chic style.  This Gucci collection also represents an imaginative/dream like sense that gives off a simply magical experience.  The Roman designer who was trusted with restoring Gucci’s assets before, has once again returned to assist and aid the fashion brand’s latest collection.

The Spring/Summer 2017 collection entitled “Magic Lanterns”, (according to Michele’s notes) was to create a line in which “the clothes tell a story steeped in wonder, phantasmagoria and unorthodoxy.”  Gowns in the collection were embellished with embroideries, ruffles, and gleaming purple & gold leggings.  Exhibited on themed bags as well as on the back of austere tweedy jackets revealed images of ferocious beasts.  Almost all of the men’s suits boasted three-quarter length pants as the female style sported bell-bottomed trousers.

What inspired this collections hairstyle, with coiffure like that of the 80’s all the way to classical hair styling of Marie Antoinette.  When Michele explained that he was pursuing to “cultivate the unexpected” in his notes.  He accomplished just that, by turning heads with a certainly unexpected style of hair.

But online reactions were not as positive, just like Michele’s earlier collections.  Although, Gucci’s French owners don’t really mind as long as the sales keep going up, which they have been doing regularly under Michele’s creative and expertly done leadership.

Meet Sophie & Charlotte Bickley

Meet the Bickley’s, Sophie (left) & Charlotte (right); Two inseparable Fashion Blogger Sisters who have made the world of fashion as amazing as can be, with their incredible blog, Yin2MyYang.  As some of the hottest fashion bloggers today they put style and charm into your casual everyday wardrobe.  Besides who doesn’t love a cool and glamours everyday look that makes your day even just a little bit more fun.  Sophie & Charlotte do just this, they put a little bit of fun in your day to day life ensuring that your living your life to the fullest.  This awesome fashion blogging duo were kind enough to take some time out of their busy schedule to tell us a little bit more about their super cool blog, their unique fashion philosophy, and some insight on their extraordinary style tips & simply stunning outfit ideas.

What inspired you to start your blog?

Sophie & Charlotte:  “We have always both been very interested in fashion and have had our own unique personal styles that have come very easy to us. It has never been hard for either of us to put together a stylish outfit. We have been surrounded by fashion our entire lives with a father who works in the depths of the fashion industry so that made us even more interested in the world of fashion.

Our friends, family, and even people we didn’t know have constantly complimented us on our style our entire lives so we FINALLY one day decided that we wanted to share our take on fashion and our personal styles with the world, not through the eyes of just one of us, but through the eyes of both of us, since we both have such different physical looks, tastes, and style preferences.

We noticed that there wasn’t a huge niche for sister bloggers (especially different looking and dressing sister bloggers) in the blogging sphere and that was another thing that pushed us to start the blog. So far it’s been really fun… nothing better than being able to call your sister your co-worker too”

“P.S. Our blog was 3 years in the making before we actually decided to launch it! Lots and lots of thought went behind it, but we had the idea to do it for years.”

Meet Sophie & Charlotte BickleyWhat sets both of your style’s apart from other personal style bloggers?

Sophie & Charlotte:  “One of the reasons we initially started our blog in the first place is because we felt that we BOTH had something different to offer from other personal style bloggers that were out there. Our styles themselves are quite different, which is part of the premise behind our blog, but we also each have individual style’s that set us apart from other personal style bloggers.

In addition, as sister bloggers, we are immediately set apart from other personal style bloggers because we get to show not only one, but two, personal style preferences through our blog and Instagram to our viewers, allowing for a wider audience of viewership and a bigger fan base – as one person might relate more to Sophie’s look and another person might find Charlotte’s to be more appealing.”

Sophie:  “I think that one thing that is different about my style than other personal style bloggers is that I am not always so overly concerned with posting the MOST current trends or the most “on trend” styles. For me, it is more about dressing in a way that I feel, whether the trend is “old” or “new”, looks stylish and makes me feel stylish and comfortable. Even if I am not wearing the most popular new trend, I always end up feeling stylish and think that people appreciate seeing versatility in trends and NOT always seeing repetitive blog posts that are only featuring the hottest “on trend” looks. That’s not to say that I don’t love to wear the current/ hot/ on trend looks, I 100% do, I just don’t mind mixing it up sometimes and even combining new trends with old ones. For this reason, I have a bunch of items in my closet that I have been wearing for years and still find beneficial to my style decisions today. I don’t think this is something that I share with most other personal style bloggers.”

Charlotte:  “My style has always been very girly so one thing that sets me apart from other personal style bloggers (including my sister) is that I always feel the need to add some sort of girly-ish twist to my look in order to stay true to my personality and personal style preferences. In addition, I also love to chase the next best thing/ or the hottest new trend and once I do, I try to get my hands on it as soon as possible so that I can be sure to reveal my passion to our readings for being informed of the latest trends….through my urgency to own them and my interest in them. I think that a lot of other personal style bloggers probably do this, as in they love to chase the newest trends as soon as possible, but that I take it to the next level…”

Meet Sophie & Charlotte BickleyWho are some of your favorite clothing designers?

Sophie & Charlotte:
1. “Stuart Vevers (Coach)
2.  Karl Lagerfeld (Chanel/Karl Lagerfeld/Fendi)
3.  Anthony Vaccarello (YSL)
4.  Jeremy Scott (Moschino, It’s Jeremy Scott)
5.  Olivier Rousteing (Balmain)
6.  Alessandro Michele (Gucci)
7.  Alexander McQueen”

Ultimate holiday destination?

Sophie & Charlotte:  “Cabo San Lucas, Mexico”

Meet Sophie & Charlotte BickleyWhat are some of your favorite outfits that you’ve posted so far?

Sophie & Charlotte:  “We will explain our favorite outfits that we’ve posted so far via the names of the posts:”

– “Days in Denim” June 5, 2016
OUTFITS: all denim outfits, jumpsuit//Sophie, romper// Charlotte

– “Meet #Rexy : The #COACHXHIGHLINE Summer Party” June 29, 2016
OUTFITS: combination of Coach dinosaur (aka Rexy) leather bomber jackets mixed with other brands- i.e. Stella McCartney denim overalls// Sophie, and high strappy Schutz gladiator heels//Charlotte

– “Showin’ Some Shoulder” July 28, 2016
OUTFITS: different takes on the very in trend “off the shoulder” look, that is one of the top trends of Summer 2016

Meet Sophie & Charlotte BickleyTalk me through a day in life of Charlotte & Sophie Bickley.

Sophie & Charlotte:  “Our day starts with a Starbucks run for some very much needed ventil iced latees to start the day. Then, depending on what day it is, we can be doing a variety of different things. Here are some examples: we can be out and about  NYC at various meetings/lunches with people in the industry or brand representatives to discuss possible collaborations or to network; we can be shooting on location with our photographer(s); we can be working on a post or researching more about the blogging industry and how to make our blog better at the Soho House (aka our office); and finally, we can be attending brand or blogging/networking events in the morning/afternoon/evening. Our days to not always consist of the same routine, but rather a mixed routine including all of the activities we mentioned above.

The life of a blogger is not an easy one and when you treat your blog like it’s your baby (which we do), it is a 24/7 job! There are lots of phone calls, meetings, and back and forth emails that go into running the business behind a blog so some of our days can also look very similar  to your “typical 9-5 job”, sitting behind a computer, answering emails, taking phone calls, and scheduling meetings.

Long story short, our days consist of doing whatever it takes to better our brand/blog, Yin 2My Yang, in any which way that we can… and also to learn something new about the blogging/fashion industry or meet someone new to network with every single day. It’s honestly tons of fun but very hard work at the same time!”

Meet Sophie & Charlotte BickleyWhat are your greatest passions?

Sophie & Charlotte:  “This may sound cheesy but our greatest passions in life could be categorized as the “three Fs”- FASHION, FAMILY, and FRIENDS. These three things are a priority for both of us and always will remain our top passions in life. Also…we have a passion to ALWAYS be nice to whoever you meet because you never know what they’ve been through in life or where your paths may cross again!! Wise words to remember.”

What summer trends do you love and which do you hate?

Sophie & Charlotte:  “Ultimate Loves: Off the Shoulder, Choker Necklaces , Platform Wedge Sandals/Espadrilles, Denim Everything, Sporting Logos/Athleisure

We’ve been trying to come up with an answer for a trend this summer that we hate and after researching all of the Summer 2016 trends several times, we honestly can’t come up with any trend we hate, especially because hate is such a strong word!

We definitely like certain summer trends more than others, but we can’t say we hate any! Sorry to disappoint!”

Meet Sophie & Charlotte BickleyWhat has been your greatest challenge since starting your blog?

Sophie & Charlotte:  “The greatest challenge for us since starting our blog has been learning about all of the behind the scenes work that goes into creating a successful and profitable blog. The good news is that day by day, we are slowly learning more and more which is very exciting and reassuring for us- it helps us keep going even when challenges arise.

In addition, in a world where our lives are so busy, one of our other challenges in starting the blog has been making sure to keep our content/posts relevant and consistent so that we do not disappoint our readers or any of the brands that we are working with.”

What is something most people do not know about either of you?

Sophie & Charlotte:  “Our dad is Bermudian! He was born and raised on the island of Bermuda, right off the coast of the Carolinas. He moved to the United States for college but is not an American citizen. If you’ve never been to Bermuda, you should go, it’s awesome and such a short flight from the East Coast!”

Sophie:  “I was born in Munich, Germany!…which means I have three separate citizenships- German, British (Bermuda is a British colony), and American!”

Charlotte:  “In addition to the blog, I’m going to be working as a buyer at Bergdorf Goodman starting in this Fall and could not be more excited for the experience!!”

Meet Sophie & Charlotte BickleyWhere to next?

Sophie & Charlotte:  “Next for us…overall: expanding our blog, continuing to raise awareness and follow up on any press opportunities to really get our names out there to as many people (not only in the fashion industry) as possible.  We would also both love to be personal stylists one day.

In the long term, we would love to do what Chiara Ferragni aka The Blonde Salad (our favorite fashion blogger ever) has done with her blog. We would love to eventually be able to travel and blog from all over the world and would LOVE to start a sister fashion line of our very own one day. That would be an ultimate goal for us and we hope that one day it will be a reality!”

Where can we follow you?

“You can follow us on our website www.yin2myyang.com for in depth posts and outfit ideas or on our Instagram which is @yin_2my_yang, which we post on daily.”

Meet Asia Borowczyk

Meet London based Asia Borowczyk, with an impeccable style and an international following, the young fashionista proves to be an innovator as she shares her travels around the globe.  We caught up with the always stylish Asia on all things fashion and lifestyle.

What is the inspiration for your unique style?
“I get my inspiration mostly from all the beautiful content I find online, starting from my Instagram feed, Business of Fashion articles, Tony Tom street style pictures all the way to my absolute favourite site www.thecoveteur.com

Talk me through a day in your life.
“Summertime finally lets me catch up on all the books, articles, movies, and videos I have been meticulously saving during exam season. When I am not lounging poolside at home completely engrossed in a book you can find me having a double espresso and keeping up to date with all the latest gossip with my best friend. (cliche, I know, but who does not love a little chit chat?)”

Asia BorowczykWhat interests you most?
“Fashion, how it influences our personality, and the way we appear to others. Apart from that, I follow religiously all of the political and economic events currently happening in the world. Movements in stock markets have been grabbing my attention more and more lately.”

What are your favorite clothing brands?
“I adore everything that Nicolas Ghesquière does for Louis Vuitton, but obviously the price tag is out of this world. I am a huge fan of french brands like Maje, Vanessa Bruno and Sandro, but to tell you the truth 70% of my closet is made up of Zara, which I mix with more high-end accessories for a polished look.”

Asia BorowczykWould you like to pursue a career in the fashion industry?
“Yes, ideally as a buyer or stylist, but I am open to any position within the field. My plans career-wise involve grabbing my dream internship at LVMH, but I need to finish my degree first before I jet off to Paris!”

Being a frequent traveler, what have been your favorite destinations and why?
“Again, the city of lights – Paris. Though, I could mention my other favourite, New York. Both of these cities have a unique fashion scene and are dotted with the most amazing hang-out places, from restaurants with the most amazing flavours to bars at Hotel Costes or Balthazar where you can enjoy the best people-watching game out there.”

Asia BorowczykAsia BorowczykFavorite Restaurants in London?
“Sushi must be Nobu on Park Lane, Yautcha for my comfort food, which is the Thai style chicken and Good Life Eatery for the life-saving hangover breakfast and a nutritious smoothie.”

Where to next?
“I just came back from beautiful Croatia and next on the map is an absolute gem on Polish seaside map – Sopot, with an all-white beach bar playing the best deep house music and serving the coldest Moet Imperial Ice. Life is good!”
