Revision Rhinoplasty: What You Should Know

Let’s talk revision rhinoplasty – in case you don’t know what this is, it’s basically a medical term that says “fixing a messed up nose job.” With nose jobs being in such high demand, sure enough, some bad ones are bound to happen. For those requesting revision rhinoplasty, or doctors prescribing it to their patients, they are seeking to help:

Sometimes, revision rhinoplasty is done for far more serious issues, as you’ll find later on in this article.

Why People Get Revision Rhinoplasty

All nasal issues – both functional and cosmetic – are best addressed during the initial nose job. However, going for a secondary or follow up surgery becomes inevitable, sometimes.

There may be an unanticipated healing problem. The issue may be due to an incomplete surgical procedure that was not handled properly during the first surgery or the reason may be beyond this information.

As said by Dr. Marcelo Ghersi, a Miami rhinoplasty specialist, many choose a revision nose job because of the less-than-satisfactory results from the first one. Most surgeons who fix these botched nose jobs have all the knowledge, experience and skills needed to treat complex revisions and can address a wide range of patient concerns. The patient’s previous records and photos, medical and operative, may be helpful to focus on the issue at hand.

What Revision Rhinoplasty Addresses

Some of the most common issues addressed during a revision or secondary rhinoplasty include, but not limited to:

Around 10 to 15 percent of patients who have undergone initial rhinoplasty may require nasal reshaping surgeries at a later date. A person who had this procedure previously might desire the surgery again because they have had difficulty breathing, or the healing process may have not gone smoothly as expected. The initial surgery may have resulted in an anatomical complication or the patient is simply dissatisfied with the results.

What Does Revision Rhinoplasty Do?

The primary purpose of a nose job revision is to correct one or more of the above issues as previously mentioned. The sooner someone with these issues receives the right direction and treatment, the more effective it can be. However, it is important to remember that the tip of the nose is a combination of soft tissue and cartilage, which will require enough time to heal and change in shape.

Sometimes, it may take several months or even years to see the end results. Today’s technology and techniques used by surgeons can minimize errors to a considerable level and bring in the desired result without complications. The equipment and methods used can lower the chances of side effects or symptoms recurring. Once the issues are addressed appropriately and in a timely manner, the patient can benefit more fully from aftercare.

For some people, secondary or revision rhinoplasty seems miraculous, reducing the issues or permanently eliminating them. This procedure usually has had a major impact on improving their symptoms: overall functioning of the nose and self-confidence. Your treating surgeon will determine what type of surgery is right for your situation, whether you are better off with the closed approach of rhinoplasty or open approach.

In a closed rhinoplasty, minor contour corrections are made. Open rhinoplasty is used where major structural changes are required. Sometimes, cartilage grafts may be needed to accomplish the intended results. The surgeon will help with the right choice in all cases and issues. They may explain why one approach or technique is more suitable for your situation than another. The patient’s individual physiology, level of functioning of the nose, its appearance and how long the issues have been there without treatment or correction, may all be related to what type of rhinoplasty is administered and how much he or she will benefit from it.

Side Effects

Revision rhinoplasty can be effective in treating a wide range of side effects because of improper primary surgery or imbalances. This procedure, as mentioned before, can also prevent recurrence of symptoms or issues in most cases. It can be highly effective for people who have been otherwise depressed or facing mood disorders due to a nose job. When people with such disorders or low self-esteem find the right treatment for their nose, their symptoms will usually disappear or reduce greatly, allowing them to live a productive and enjoyable life.

Most patients with an initial faulty operation can gain considerable relief and cure when they undergo revision rhinoplasty. More and more effective treatment and procedures are being developed in this field all the time. And much research and technology are underway for new and more effective techniques.

Over the Moon with Makenzie Moon Phelan

The Extravagant discusses art, culture and makeup with Makenzie Moon Phelan, NYC based artist and socialite, and daughter of wickedly fun art world patrons Amy and John Phelan. Drawing from a wide range of cultural references, we dive into her work as a makeup artist and her contemporary art practice:

What drew you to the world of make-up?  What do you feel is the role of the make-up artist and how does your fine art background (i.e. painting) inform your practice?

“Since I was young, I have been interested in both fine art and make-up for cinema or fashion.  Before parties and events, my mom and her friends would have me apply their make-up just at the age of seven, and I realized this is something I really enjoyed creatively. Creating and being around Contemporary Art heavily influences my make-up practice.  From thinking about how palettes and materials work together, to the physical application of pigment is so painterly.”

What inspires you, where do you draw inspiration from?  We noticed Stephen Hawking on your Insta, who inspires you?

“In my opinion, everyone’s view of the world is very different up to the point where my blue could be your green. I think how different people view our world is what has shaped and shifted basic human knowledge and understanding. Whether it be philosophers, artists, scientist, or famous mathematicians; had they not shared their personal world [inside of their head] with the public, our universe would lack so much color and expansiveness.”

“I am really inspired by the artists Will Cotton, Marilyn Minter, Marc Dennis, and Richard Phillips due to their fine craft. Currently I’m hooked on this brilliant Italian artist Paola Pivi. I think the mind and methods behind her works are beautiful.”

“I am also really inspired by trends in decades. I love the 60’s, especially Edie Sedgwick, and I also am fascinated with 18th Century aesthetic. Adding contemporary palettes to an old time period is really fun for me.”

Ornamentation on an anthropological level exists throughout human history, what is the role of make-up in society in your opinion?

“Makeup is a form of self expression. It also allows people the ability to enhance their natural beauty by using different color palettes, glitter, symbols and light diffusion.”

What is your dream commission as a make-up artist?  Is it cinema, is it runway, etc;

“I feel like my work is multi-faceted, so I would be thrilled to work in film or runway, but my dream project would be any form of collaboration or work with Ve Neill [of Beetlejuice and Hunger Game fame] one day. She is an extremely powerful woman in the makeup industry who’s work has influenced me since I was a little kid.”

What trends do you love in make-up and obversely what do you dislike?  Favourite brands? Favourite makeup artists?

“My favorite trend in makeup is a basic cat eye with a red lip. I usually never leave my house without a cat eye. It’s a classic yet sexy look. I’m also really into the 60’s makeup trends. I think the big brows, dark sculpted eyes and dramatic lashes is a very feminine and playful look. I also love drag makeup. I’ve learned some of the best techniques through the drag community when I was living in London.”

“I’m not a huge fan of the heavy contour look, or any kind of makeup that covers freckles. I think makeup should always enhance one’s natural and inner beauty.”

“My favorite makeup artist in the beauty industry of all time is Charlotte Tilbury, that is a person I would also love to work with. In the special effects realm my favorite artist is Ve Neill. Pertaining to music, it is hard for me to pin down a favorite band, but my favorite musician is Marilyn Manson. I think he is brilliant, and a walking piece of art. There’s so much more to him than what lays on the surface.”

What is the relationship between art and fashion?

“Both art and fashion are an extension of an individual’s creativity.  Creating or collecting art is an expression of self, just as fashion is.”

When did you become interested in art?

“From a very young age I have been creating art!  I grew up in a household that not only welcomed creativity, but championed it.  I have always been surrounded by incredible works of contemporary art, and I feel very fortunate that in most cases I know or am friends with the artist that has made them.”

Tell us about your own work as an artist? What projects have you taken part of? What’s your favourite media to work in (other than cosmetics)

“I love working with oil on canvas, and have had private instruction by some incredible artists such as Marc Dennis and Will Cotton. When I was younger, the problems I faced growing up (my personal inner turmoil) created a lot of noise in my head, I started writing poetry at a very young age as an outlet, then began illustrating the emotions behind my poetry and it evolved from there.”

The Freedom Within, Makenzie Moon Phelan, Oil on Canvas.

How do you navigate between a cultural patron, an artist, and a muse?

“I don’t see these as being separate parts of my personality.  I think they all relate to each other, and I am just thrilled I can be part of a creative community in all of these capacities. People inspire me on a daily basis, and I feel happy I can inspire others as well.”

Skull, Makenzie Moon Phelan, oil on canvas.

How does growing up in a family of art collectors impact your own aesthetic preferences?

“Growing up around some of the best examples of contemporary art is an incredible education.  Not only do I get to learn about new artists, but I am able to study the depth behind the individual behind the work, and learn about the material process of an artist. It also really helped me embrace my individuality as a person, leaving me unafraid to push boundaries with the way I dressed, or wore my makeup. Growing up around art the way I did also inspired me to let go of any fear of being experimental.”

Without any limitations tell us five artists or works of art you’d love to see in your dream collection.

  1. One [of] Paola Pivi’s colorful feathered (life size) Polar bears and a piece from her “Zebras” series
  2. One of Marilyn Manson’s water color pieces
  3. Anything by Marc Rothko
  4. One of Will Cotton’s Cake Sculptures
  5. A Donald Judd “Stacks”

Are you affiliated with any institutions, foundations, or organizations?

“I just moved back to New York City, and am exploring new opportunities. As of right now I am affiliated [with] my family’s foundation. The Phelan Family Foundation believes that all people deserve the opportunity to succeed. To accomplish its mission, the Foundation funds a broad range of causes including education, the arts, health care, military personnel, and vulnerable populations. The Foundation seeks to address community needs at all levels—be it access to clean water, safe shelter and nutritious food, or education and training that unleashes the potential for economic prosperity. It also seeks to effect lasting change and measurable outcomes, while maintaining the Phelans’ sense of compassion and gratitude to the world.”

Having lived in many different places: where is home, literally and philosophically?

“I am currently based in New York, which is where I grew up. New York City is home for me.  I’ve spent time living in London and Los Angeles, but I recently moved back to NYC after finishing a program in special effects makeup on the West coast.  I also spend a lot of time in Palm Beach, FL and Aspen, CO with my family.”

What are some of your favourite places to visit in the world, what shouldn’t we miss?  What are some of your favourite art world or cultural events?

“Every summer I look forward to attending the ArtCrush events for the Aspen Art Museum, an event hosted by my amazing Mother, Amy Phelan. My favorite places I’ve traveled to though are Dubai, Chiang Mai, Jaipur, and Kyoto.”

Little Luxuries You Can Treat Yourself with Every Day

Although silk sheets don’t necessarily count as a relevant parameter of someone’s success, they sure speak volumes of the person’s can-dos… as does their bank balance and that trip to New Caledonia. Don’t you just love the fact that the days of I-can’t-afford-this are gone and you finally get to enjoy the glitz of life in (almost) all of its sparkle? It’s refreshing, isn’t it; not having to worry about anything except making sure you’re the best possible version of yourself? We simply love it!

Suffice (it) to say that a girl of your caliber deserves the best of everything, all the time. No, it’s not because you’ve been that gold-fed, lazy, I-want-it-now spoiled daddy’s princess from the get go… but quite the opposite – it’s because you’ve made it happen yourself, and this is your moment to celebrate it.

Assuming you’re still getting used to the “unbearable” easiness of life, we’ll lay out a few ideas that’ll definitely help you enjoy the fruits of your work and see the wonderful side of life… you’ll get used to it in a blink, we promise!

Little Luxuries You Can Treat Yourself with Every Day

Luxury spa treatments

Regularly indulging in spa treatments is one of those fabulous things every girl should allow herself to enjoy; there’s nothing as relaxing as a weekly pampering session with your favorite masseuse and cosmetician. Just being there in the moment, with a glass of bubbly in one hand and Vogue or Marie Claire in the other, while a polite professional is doing your toenails is bliss. Or, lying on a massage table without a worry in the world… sure sounds like a perfect day in a week to have. Don’t you think?

Little Luxuries You Can Treat Yourself with Every Day

Egyptian cotton sheets

Not that there was anything wrong with your former bedding, but investing in a set of Egyptian cotton sheets will take you to heaven! With their quality craftsmanship, breathable fabrics, polished look and amazing design – these sheets sure are a game-changer. Granted, once you buy them you’ll probably find it impossible to get out of bed, but some pleasures are simply worth being late.

Little Luxuries You Can Treat Yourself with Every Day

Champagne Friday/Bloody Mary Sunday

Dressed in any of your favorite designer dresses, waiting for the girls to pop at your door and bring the finest Champagne to taste (hey, it’s not that we’ve got anything against tequila, but Champagne, after all, is the taste we’re after), you are once again ready to have a night of your life. Unlike those cheap outings from a few years back (okay, sure, those too did have their flair), this is the time to enjoy the finest queen-worthy quality alcohol and never again worry about the headaches the day after (we’ve all been there, it’s okay).

Saturdays are reserved for a brunch out with your parents or prospective clients, naturally. Often, these turn into a fun day of horse-riding, clay pigeon shooting, playing pool, a sudden limo road trip to the nearby city for what seem to be “the best pancakes in the state” … or whatever it is you feel like doing. Now, Sundays… Sundays are for your in-home Bloody Marys (we’ll take an extra shot of specially tailored vodka, please!), best friends, movies and chill. Delicious.

Little Luxuries You Can Treat Yourself with Every Day

Fly first class

Once you go first class, you never go back. And that’s the only argument that you need. Oh, and – once you switch from coach to first, make sure you go to as many destinations as possible. Traveling will enrich your soul, broaden your horizons, introduce you to new cultures, and help you meet some amazing people out there – especially when you have the money to cash in for all the extras like five-star hotels, Safari tours, helicopter rides, etc. It’s a blessing, really.

Little Luxuries You Can Treat Yourself with Every Day

Indulging in an at-home massage/facial/yoga class/whatever

Sometimes, the advantage of having resources to take proper care of yourself mean that, from time to time, you’ll allow yourself to be spoiled and lazy, guilt-free. And that’s fine. Organizing anything from an in-home yoga class, facials, massages, Henna tattooing with your girls, cooking classes, or anything else that you feel like doing is a blast! We encourage you to do it as often as possible.

Well, we’ve given you just a few ideas to think about – the rest is up to you. Whatever you do, program yourself to put your comfort first and enjoy all that you’ve been blessed with. Appreciation is the most important quality to nurture, don’t you ever forget it… yes, even when your diamond shoes blister.

Celebrity Teeth Whitening Secrets

A pearly white smile is a staple requirement in the celeb world and we can’t say that we, ourselves, haven’t got hooked up. Obviously, unless you’ve been living under the rock you must have noticed teeth whitening kits promoted by the celebs all over Instagram – from Ashley Benson, Kylie Jenner, Scott Disick to many, many others who simply can’t hide their excitement about having a gorgeous smile. And we get it, we totally do. But, could they be faking it? The kits, we mean. Possibly. To our understanding, almost all of the glitterati are much rather turning to their orthodontists for teeth whitening and we may be finally on the key to scraping all of their amazing secrets!

We’ve picked up some fantastic inside info on teeth hygiene while talking to a few LA-based dentists with many A-list clientele.

From standard, decadent treatments (veneers) to DIY hacks you can do at home, we have the list, and we have it all!

So, shall we?

Put together your own stain-blasting formula

All you need is some baking soda and hydrogen peroxide (3% or less, which is safe for oral use); to be precise, mix 3 tsp of baking soda with 2 tsp of hydrogen peroxide and you are good to go. Once the paste is made, use it to brush away stains. A word of caution, though – don’t brush too hard, otherwise you may scrub away your enamel.

Straw things up

Well, even though beauty bloggers will advise against straws (as, apparently, they are adding to lines forming around the mouth), they may as well be your secret whitening weapon.

Dark foods and liquids such as coffee, red wine, tea and similar tend to stain teeth, which is why it is best to drink them by using a straw. Also, always brush your teeth or rinse after consuming dark liquids.

Apples, apples, apples

They aren’t called Heaven fruit for nothing! Apples are not only amazing for keeping your figure toned and digestive tract on point, but they are a perfect teeth-cleansing fruit, too! Eating an apple or two a day may add to teeth cleansing, and it removes stains.

Professional help is worth it

Springing for a professional whitening treatment isn’t something to run away from as it isn’t that expensive at all, it’s medically tested, long-lasting, safe and it is done by professionals who know their job

In-office bleaching has become the quickest and most efficient whitening processes available — celebs have it on their schedule right along with coloring or cutting their hair. It can be done from once every couple of months to once a year, and can cost from $500 to $800, claimed by experts who’s been working with celebrities for years.  They also observed that teeth whitening is trending in Sydney as it is around the world, and that everyone who minds their smile should do it.

For those who want to splurge, veneers are the way to go (as in $800 to $2,000 per tooth).

Whitening may be about lipstick, too

For those who aren’t that into teeth whitening of any type but still want to have a smile worth talking about (in a positive manner, of course), wearing bright red lipstick will do the trick. The red will make your teeth pop and appear whiter than they are! A piece of advice: always choose blue-based lippies over orange-red tones, as “the former will create even more of a brightening optical illusion”.

Well, there you have it! Now, go on, smile – you look amazing!

Glamorous Makeup Looks for New Year’s Eve

The most glamorous night of them all is approaching – celebrating New Year’s Eve is always a nice occasion to show off your most glamorous looks. Since it only comes around once a year, nothing is forbidden. This applies to clothing, hairstyles, and, of course, makeup. New Year’s Eve is quite literally your time to shine, so you better stock up on sequined clothes and glittery makeup. In case you ran out of ideas, here are some of the best makeup styles for you to look as glamorous as possible while you are waiting for 2017 to come.

Sparkling cut crease

Glamorous Makeup Looks for New Year's Eve

Cut crease technique is unavoidable when you want to achieve a dramatic look and there’s no better occasion for it than New Year’s’ Eve. Start by prepping your skin for makeup with high-quality skincare products, such are those from Alpha H collection. Once you’ve done this, prime your eyes with an eye primer and outline your crease and upper lash line with dark blue pencil. Create a cat-eye in the corner and blend it with a fluffy brush. Also, add a bit of dark blue shadow to intensify the colour. Grab a silver eyeshadow and apply a thick layer carefully so it doesn’t get onto the crease. Don’t forget about glitter pigment either! Apply eyeliner on upper lash line and put some mascara and false lashes if you like. Finish off with highlighting your brows. Since this is a really dramatic look, you’ll want to keep the rest of the makeup minimal – opt for a neutral lipstick and you’re good to go.

Shiny and romantic

Glamorous Makeup Looks for New Year's Eve

This one’s a subtle yet glamorous look for the night of 31st December and it starts by applying foundation and some highlighter on top of your cheeks to enhance your natural glow. A bonus tip for highlighting: add a dash of darker blush just below your cheekbone to create a more dramatic look. Fill in your brows subtly and then proceed to create a metallic eyes look. Base the whole lid with a concealer and then add copper eyeshadow on the inner and the outer corners of the lid. Put a thick layer of gold eye shadow in the middle and repeat until it blends with the corners. Traditionally, you would finish off with red lipstick but dare to be bold this year and consider adding beige gold lipstick to create a nice monochromatic look. Complete the look with a fine layer of mascara, et voilà – you’re ready to party.

Red lipstick classic

Glamorous Makeup Looks for New Year's Eve

It’s amazing how a simple look with winged eyeliner and the right shade of lipstick can look glamorous. Of course, just because you won’t need many makeup products, it doesn’t mean it’s easy to get it right since winged eyeliner is a nightmare to most women. Our advice is to start early and be patient. After you prepped your skin and primed the eyes, grab your eyeliner and start drawing. To make it even more glamorous, add a fine line of glitter eyeliner next to the black eyeliner. Apply two coats of mascara and highlight the brows gently and your eye makeup is done. Proceed to the lips but be careful – red lipstick can bring out any inflammations you have on the skin, such as blemishes, veins, and capillaries, so you’ll want to create a smooth, even canvas with some fine liquid foundation formula. Finally, choose your shade of red lipstick, put it onto your pout and that’s it!

Now it’s your turn – make your choice and start prepping your makeup tools. Whatever look you choose, one thing is certain – you’ll surely turn heads and enter 2017 looking glamorous. Happy New Year!

New York Fashion Week Hair & Makeup Trends

Fashion week graced the streets of New York this September. As much as we love to look at the new clothing styles to check out for 2017, taking note of the hair and makeup trends from the show can give us an insight into what is going to be a hot look this season. There were a variety of different looks lining the runway, but these are the hair and makeup trends which left us all gasping and admiring.

wet-hair-look
Wet Look Hair

The wet, combed, slicked-back hairstyle look took centre stage from Altuzarra and was hugely popular. As well as sweeping the hair back, Hood By Air covered the whole hair in gel, giving a wet and greasy effect.

Bleach Blonde

Alexander Wang boldly went for the bleach blonde look. Not afraid to turn redheads into blondes, Wang opted for a blonde look to accompany the new season of clothes.

Hair Accessories

There were a variety of different accompanying hair pieces for up-and-down hairstyles. From ballerina bun nets with an artistic twist (Ryan Roche, above), to a bright and bold, 90s-style bandana by Baja East. Monique Lhuillier also showed us that a simple black bow can add a classy effect to even a scraggly ponytail.

If bandanas and bows are not your thing, hairstylist Frank Rizzieri tried the unique option of using a belt as a hair accessory in a low ponytail.

Glitter Lips

DKNY brought the defining glitter lips to the runway. Pat McGrath created what she calls a “crescendo of glitter” on the lips of models, contrasted with minimal eye makeup for maximum impact.

Red Lips

In contrast to DKNY, bold red lips were another feature to be seen by many. While some artists modelled this with minimal eye makeup, bold eyes and bold lips together were also on show. Matte, fluorescent or orange tinged, red lips are a thing to be seen in the upcoming season and will soon be grabbed off the shelves of department stores.

sweating-gold
Sexy Sweaty

To go with the wet hair look, makeup artist Tom Pecheux went for a look of “sweating gold”. The look was created by going over the skin with a subtle highlighter, then adding a very light and gentle touch of glitter. He finished by smudging eye pencil around the eyes, giving the sexy sweaty look.

Louis Vuitton Opens Their Doors To The World Of Fragrance

Louis Vuitton has been making high quality leather accessories and travel bags for over a century, but now the luxury fashion brand is going to try opening a few doors into the fragrance industry.  So Maison is putting his heart and soul into accomplishing beyond flawless aromas for the upcoming collection, labeled Les Parfums Louis Vuitton.

Louis Vuitton has even hired master perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, who exclusively designed the seven following scents; Rose des Vents, Dans la Peau, Contre Moi, Turbulences, Mille Feux, Apogee, and Matiere Noire.  Belletrud used unique extraction techniques, so that the collection would feature only the purest of floral and leather.  The perfumes are already set to be issued in 100 to 200-ml sizes, and will be priced at $240 and $350 each, respectively.
